Recollections of an Overseas Chinese, 2nd Edition
Chi Him Chiu
The narrative begins with our hero leaving his birthplace Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, China and crossing the South China Sea for Singapore and Johor, Malaya; returning again to Singapore's suburb Bukitima. In time, he travels over the same stretch of water to settle down in Kuching, Sarawak. Then he goes back to his native land and enters a university in the southeastern province of Fujian. Several years later, he migrates to Hong Kong, tries his luck in the Philippines, and finally finds a permanent home in the United States. The adventure of our hero includes his experiences in the infamous years of Japanese Occupation during the Second World War; the post-war student unrest in Kuching Chung Hua Middle School; the struggle between the Sarawak Communist Party and the British colonial government; the ebb and flow of the Sarawak Communist Movement; the Anti-rightist Movement of China and a host of other movements in that historical period viewed from the perspective of an overseas Chinese student.
